About Dr James

I’m a cancer specialist with two key areas of expertise:

One: Treatment of bowel, pancreatic and liver cancer with chemotherapy, targeted therapies, immunotherapy and radiotherapy

Two: Treating secondary (metastatic) tumours anywhere in the body with stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR), a non-invasive and highly effective approach

When you’re facing cancer, you deserve two things: the very best modern medicine has to offer, and a doctor who listens, understands, and works hard on your behalf. That’s exactly what I provide.

Consultant Clinical Oncologist at University Hospitals Birmingham, one of the largest NHS oncology departments in the UK

Clinical Director at GenesisCare where I lead the UK’s busiest and most innovative SABR and MRI-guided radiotherapy service

Private treatment via a network of hospitals in the Midlands, Oxford and London

20+ years helping people navigate illness with focus and compassion

Research-driven expertise in colorectal (bowel) cancer, liver and pancreatic cancers, and stereotactic radiotherapy for secondary (metastatic) tumour

“When I was going through probably the toughest time in my life, having James’ support was invaluable. You are about to make an important decision on which oncologist to see, and I have no hesitation in recommending James.”

How I work with you — personalised care for gastrointestinal cancer and metastatic disease

Cancer care should never be one-size-fits-all. Every patient I see receives a unique treatment plan, built in collaboration with an exceptional multidisciplinary team — one of the most experienced in Europe. We combine drug therapy, modern radiotherapy, and surgery in the right sequence to give you the greatest chance of living as long and as well as possible. If you’ve been diagnosed in the NHS and want to explore private treatment options, or if you simply want a second opinion, I’m here to help you.

My work as an oncologist means I have extensive expertise in:

Chemotherapy and immunotherapy for bowel cancer (colon and rectal), pancreatic cancer, liver cancer (HCC), bileduct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma), and smallbowel cancers.

Advanced radiotherapy techniques including adaptive MRI-guided radiotherapy for rectal, liver and pancreatic cancer and selective internal radiotherapy (SIRT) for liver tumours

Stereotactic radiotherapy for stage 4 cancer in the adrenal, bone, liver, lung, node and spine – this includes people with breast, lung, prostate, ovarian, skin/melanoma and other primary tumours.

“James is amazing. So professional, supportive and dedicated. I feel secure in the knowledge that he is my oncologist and in safe hands knowing he is overseeing my care. I would recommend James 100% and so grateful to him for everything.”

My philosophy — treating the whole person, not just the cancer

Many things have shaped how I work with people who have cancer. My scientific training and clinical training, and my work as a consultant, have given me the confidence to deal with anything cancer might throw at you.

My own experience of undergoing cancer treatment also made me realise that the best outcomes flow from a strong working relationship, based on the following:

Respecting your goals and lifestyle, involving your family or carers if you want me to, and balancing treatment intensity with quality of life.

Offering practical lifestyle guidance including nutrition tips you can follow, activity plans you can sustain, sleep and stress strategies, and open-minded but pragmatic advice on supplements and alternative medicine.

Making sure my team are available to you when you need us, with straightforward contact routes and timely reviews.

If you come to me for private treatment such as MRI-guided radiotherapy, I will coordinate closely with your existing NHS or private oncologist so that nothing is left to chance.

“James’ demeanour relaxed me within the first few minutes of speaking with him. He explained the process clearly and precisely, covering what to expect from the treatment, potential side effects and the current success rate. A very thorough consult and follow up – thank you for making me feel at ease throughout the process.”
